Seven Sets
Seven things worth sharing…
1. The comeback story you havent heard of…
Basketball player Diamond DeShields just won a WNBA Championship title with the Chicago Sky last October. She is a former All-Star and Naismith Girls High School Player of the Year. In January 2020, she had surgery to remove a tumor on her spinal cord. The surgery could have left her paralyzed.
Through gruesome therapy, back tremors, and foot pain so severe that the touch of a bed sheet was excruciating, she was able to return to her team. Her story is one for all of us: no matter the obstacles, there IS a way to the goal we seek!
2. You’re never too old…
Breaking track and field world records are fun to watch. But when its done by a 100 year old man, its even better! Lester Wright ran the 100m in 26.34!
3. Breaking racial barriers
Kentucky Oaks Day in horse racing is held the day before the Kentucky Derby. It is for thoroughbred fillies. This year, winner Seven Scents, was owned by a team of black female owners, named Living the Dream. It was the first time a syndicate of black female horse owners had a horse win the race.
African-Americans in horse racing have a rich and successful history. In my US History course, I talk about Isaac Murphy, the Kentucky Derby’s first 3 time winner (1884, 1890, and 1891). From the American Revolution through Reconstruction, black men served as horse caretakers, trainers and jockeys. For more on African-Americans in horse racing, click on the following:

4. Naomi’s new gig
Naomi Osaka will become the first female athlete to start her own sports agency. It will be called EVOLVE. Naomi is the highest paid female athlete in the world, investing in many different ventures. She says:
"Evolve is the natural next step in my journey as both an athlete and businesswoman, as well as a way to continue being myself and doing things my way."
5. Aaron Judge’s #1 fan
The “feel good” story of the month is this one: a young Aaron Judge fan was at the May 4 game between the Yankees and Blue Jays. A Blue Jays fan caught Judge’s home run and turned around and gave it to the young fan, 9 year old Derek Rodriguez. Derek’s reaction is one of joy and gratitude. Watch the GMA story below where Michael Strahan gets emotional over the story! Robin Roberts had to give Strahan a tissue!
But that is not the end of this story! The following day, Judge invited both Rodriguez and the Blue Jays fan, Mike Lanzillotta, to the dugout to meet him. Lanzillotta walked away with a signed George Springer jersey, to replace the ball he gave away.
6. What I am reading…
I LOVE to play board games! It reminds me of when my brother and I used to play when we were little. My kids and I played often before they discovered electronic devices!
Here is a list of 21 articles about board games from getpocket.com. Article topics include Clue, Chess, Scrabble, Candy Land, and Mastermind.
7. The NFL Schedule is out!
I have to admit that this Cowboys video announcing their schedule with Stephen A. Smith is pretty funny!
