Welcome to this biweekly newsletter, written by me, Corye Perez Beene, Ph.D. I am a United States History Professor and certified “sports nut.” I find the sports stories from the past to the present that celebrate the Awesomeness of American Sports (NO politics!)
Thank you for your support! I am so appreciative of YOU being here 😃

Personal note: My family and I just moved so I resigned my Tenured Full-Time Professor Position. I am looking for remote work in the Digital Media or Digital Sports media space. I can edit, proofread, write, curate stories, etc. Do you need someone to write your newsletter? If you are hiring or know of someone hiring for this type of work, would you reach out to me? Historybeene@gmail.com Thanks so much!
Gold Medal
I have been amazed at watching the Paralympics! These athletes are just remarkable! As of this writing, Team USA has 101 medals, of which 35 are Gold. Here are some terrific pictures of competitors:
This is a list of each Medal won by Team USA: HERE
I did not know that several countries like Germany, Italy and Turkey have professional wheelchair leagues that Americans play in; sadly, the USA does not have one. I teach Part-time at the University of Texas at Arlington which has wheelchair basketball. The men and women’s teams have sent athletes to the Paralympics since the program’s inception in 1976. Who knows? Maybe there is a pro wheelchair league in the USA’s future?
This gentlemen competed for Egypt in the Table Tennis competition. He does not have arms so he played with the paddle in his mouth! Wow! Simply astounding!
Do you know the history of the Paralympics? It started after World War II to help the injured and disabled. Dr. Ludwig Guttmann, a German-British neurologist, initiated competition for athletes with disabilities, which eventually grew into the Paralympics. Read more about it HERE
Silver Medal
Two sports leagues have seen impressive ratings increases in the last couple of years: Major League Soccer (MLS) and the Premiere Lacrosse League (PLL).
PLL: up 33% from 2019 MLS: 50% increase since 2020
The MLS All-Stars beat the Liga MX All-Stars in overtime 3-2 last month.
Will these sports be the next “big thing?”
Could cricket be in the mix as well? The American Premiere League begins this month in White Plains, New York. Cricket is the second most popular spectator sport in the world behind soccer, boasting an estimated 2.5 billion fans!
Team USA earned a silver medal in the 2021 IIHF Women’s World Championship. They lost 3-2 in overtime to Canada.
This young lady broke the Guinness world record for Lowest Limbo Roller Skating.
Bronze Medal
Are you ready for some football????????????
I was mesmerized by this drone footage of the Dallas Cowboys Frisco facility shown on HBO’s Hard Knocks.
Peyton Manning and Eli Manning will have their own Monday Night Football broadcast on ESPN2. They will host celebrities, as well as past and current NFL players, during their show. I love watching Peyton Manning’s Nationwide commercials and still laugh when I think of him on Saturday Night Live a few years ago. I think the two brothers are entertaining and will bring a different experience to watching the game.
This is probably outside the scope of what my newsletter is about, but I could use some help with my Fantasy Football Team. I let the AutoDraft pick my team and my report card for my team was a “D!” Ugh! Here is my team:
Any tips would be helpful, since I do not like losing!
I need some bowling tips from this young man; never mind that he is SIX YEARS OLD and picked up the five/seven/ten split!
Looking for a suggestion for someone to follow on Twitter? I recommend J.R. Smith:
@TheRealJRSmith
J.R. played in the NBA for 16 years, including 2 NBA Championship titles with the Lakers and Cavaliers. He never attended college since he was drafted right out of high school in 2004. Therefore, he decided to get an education. He is attending North Carolina A &T, where he has joined the Golf team. He has been tweeting about his time in college. Like this:
Been up since 5am LA time working on my education assignments. One bad week will not spoil the semester. Lace your boots up put your head up and go to work. #StuccInMyGrind
His tweets are amusing and relatable! I am enjoying them, especially since I teach College students. Good luck to J.R. and thank you for inspiring older adults that its not too late to pursue your education!
