Seven stories worth sharing
1. Las Vegas Aces make record 18 3-pointers
Tying a WNBA record, the Las Vegas Aces (coached by one of my fave coaches Becky Hammon) made 18 3-point shots against the Los Angeles Sparks last month. They won the game 104-76.
2. 1st women’s rowing team at an HBCU
St. Augustine University in North Carolina has become the first HBCU to start a women’s rowing program. In 1964, Howard University began a men’s rowing team, lasting through the 1970s. Read more about their story HERE. The ladies will begin competing this Fall.
3. Rugby scores big
The World Cup of rugby is coming to the United States. The Men’s Rugby World Cup is coming in 2031 and the Women’s Rugby World Cup in 2033. It will be the first time the event will be held in North America. The last men’s tournament, held in 2019, drew 1.7 million visitors. It has 20 teams that play over 50 games in 7 weeks, spread out over different venues throughout the host country.
4. Lightning strikes…twice?
Your odds of catching a home run ball is slim to none. But this guy caught TWO in the same inning at the Boston Red Sox vs. Atlanta Braves game.
5. What I am reading…
Ever since I read this quote from Susan B. Anthony, I have become more interested in the history of bicycles:
“I think it has done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world.”
I came across this article about the bicycle by the fabulous historian Jill Lepore. Its part history, part autobiography…
Since I dont know much about hockey, I am reading this article from Mental Floss about hockey slang…
A quiz over Negro Leagues trivia from the Library of Congress…
This article about softball player Jocelyn Alo of the Oklahoma Sooners, who has hit the most home runs in NCAA Division I history…
6. What I am listening to…
Since I am a huge Shawn Johnson (Olympic gold medalist in gymnastics) fan, I was happy to listen to her on “The Player’s Pod” podcast:
7. What I am watching…
I am looking forward to watching the History Channel’s 2 day documentary on Teddy Roosevelt. Roosevelt was instrumental in helping save football when critics wanted to end the sport because players were dying on the field.
Thank you for your support! I am so appreciative of YOU being here 😃
